Ali was shot dead by three masked members of Suna Waljameca in her home in Galkayo, Puntland region, Somalia on the evening of October 19. Ali has been an active member of the underground church in the Lower Juba region since 1997, as part of the Somali Christian Brothers’ Organization.

2) Threats against pastors in COLOMBIA

Christian Solidarity Worldwide reports about the brutal murder of Pastor Rafael Velasquez in the Colombian region of Cordóba. The assassination of Pastor Rafael is part of serial of threats against a number of Protestant pastors in the region, done by illegal armed groups operating in the area. Christian Solidarity Worldwide states that at least three pastors have been forcibly displaced with their families, after being told by the armed groups that they and their families would be killed if they did not leave the area.

Prayer points:
- Pray for peace and comfort for the family of Pastor Velasquez.
- Pray for the safety of other pastors, church leaders and their families in the Cordóba region in Colombia.

3) Persecution continues in UZBEKISTAN

Forum 18 News Service keep informing the world about continuous violations of religious freedom in Uzbekistan, which list the country among those with still repressive and not-democratic regimes of governance. Pavel Peichev, the head of Uzbekistan’s Baptist Union, together with two of his colleagues went on trial on 24 September accused of “teaching religion illegally to children at church-run summer camps and evading tax on profits from the camp.” The punishment for these charges is of up to three years’ mprisonment. Pavel Peichev and his colleagues deny all charges.

Prayer points:
- Pray for significant and lasting advances in religious freedom in Uzbekistan
- Pray for spiritual strength and wisdom for the persecuted for their faith in the country
- Pray for God’s intervention on behalf of Pavel Peichev and his colleagues at the ongoing trial against them.

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church 2009
We continue with the prayer points, as part of the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP) — an initiative of the Religious Liberty Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance, takes place every November around the world. Next prayer focus is on behalf of the BUDDHIST WORLD, where Christians face persecution from militant Buddhists or legal/state discrimination. As we pray, remember the words of a persecuted Burmese pastor, reading as follows: “God has been so good to us that we are not afraid of difficulties.”
Prayer points:
- Pray that Christians in Burma will be sustained, kept safe and blessed with faith, peace, and the assurance of God’s love and presence in their lives.
- Pray that God will protect Christians in Sri Lanka from the schemes of Buddhist nationalists so that they may witness and worship with liberty and security. May God empower the Sri Lankan Church as a peacemaker to show the light of truth in the midst of long-term ethnic conflict.
- Pray for God to embolden the young church in Bhutan to be a wise and sensitive agent of blessing in the midst of pressure and opposition. Pray for the Spirit of Christ to infiltrate and transform Buddhists, softening and enlightening their hearts and turning them towards peace and progress.
